It was 69 years ago today...
On the morning of June 6, 1944, American, British, and Canadian soldiers made up the bulk of the forces that landed on the beaches of France to begin taking back the ground lost to the forces of Nazi Germany. My step father was one of those men.
He was in the second wave of landing craft that hit the beach at Normandy. A young man, already promoted to corporal, and withing a week he was promoted again to seargent. He told me the promotion was basically because he was alive still after a week and THAT qualified him to be promoted as much as anything else.
That was 69 years ago today. When the movie "Saving Private Ryan" came out about 15 years ago, I took Al to see the movie with me. It brought tears to his eyes. He said he had seen that same thing in his mind thousands of times since that day, but watching the movie brought back the sounds in such a realistic way that he it felt like being there all over again.
If you have ever seen that movie, imagine living that for real. And the next time you see an old veteran, one who looks to be about 90 in a restaurant or out shopping, wearing one of those hats that says WWII Vet, do what Holly always does, and take a minute to walk up to him and say "Thank you."
