Needle Choices Made Simple...

Which needle to choose?
Use ballpoints for knits and sharps for everything else. As you
figured out, sharps cut the knit materials while ballpoints push around the thread and into the hole next to it.
Normally you would use a 75/11 needle unless you are going to stitch on something that requires a stronger (ie: thicker) needle, like a very heavy fabric or many thicknesses of material. In that case you would go up to an 80/12 needle.
With metallic thread you use a "metallic thread needle" which has a larger eye. Most important with metallic thread is that you have
practically zero drag on the thread path and slow down your machine's stitching speed.
